Lions Tournaments 2011
Some of us braved the elements at Littleport this weekend! Find out how the Spartans and the Cyclones got on in Antony's report below….
Littleport Lions Tournament Report (Sat 28th/Sun 29th May):
The following people took part in the Littleport Lions tournament last weekend:
- Jonathon
- Pieter
- Jenni
- Elly
- Mhari
- John R
- Lucy B
- Jack
- Carla
- Janine
- Antony
- Clare
- Gavin
- Greg
- George
- Rob N
- Alyson
In particular a big shout out to Clare who came along, not being put off by the weather or drive up to Littleport, and played a couple of matches despite having only been to one week of the beginners course.
City entered two mixed- teams (codenamed Spartans and Cyclones to limit any feeling of preference between the two. Rather disappointingly there were no goal celebrations involving people ripping their shirt off to revel greased up abs and shouting ‘we are City’, or people spinning around like little Hurricanes. In fact there were no goal celebrations at all till George came along on Sunday and accosted Jonathon with a Stevenage football scarf). In retrospect Cyclones possibly wasn’t the best name with the wind being so fierce that at some points players had to avoid the hazard of falling posts (as well as the excessive contact in the collect). Maybe next year we will be the City Sunshine.
Battling the elements, Cyclones did better than expected by coming 5th (out of 9 teams, featuring those from a far a field as Ely, Norwich and Cambridge), I thought they were going to come last for most of the weekend. Whilst Spartans came 4th, I thought they were going to win it for most of the weekend. I’m not sure who actually won the tournament overall.
There was some good korf from everyone, and I’m sure that most (if not all) people scored at least one goal (I am told that Gavin only missed his penalty due to the barricade of festive balloons that Lions had decorated the korf with). Also after years of trying Carla scored one of her ‘trademark’ goal attempts (the one where she throws the ball over her head whilst standing in the feed).

On less korf-related issues:
We broke the record for shortest use of a Club gazebo, with the new shiny gazebo lasting less than 2hrs before being blown over and breaking.
The usual Littleport curry was joint affair between City and Phoenix.
There was a celidah in the evening but most of us decided instead to drink beer and play beer pong (won by Team Awesome). We also found out who at the club was unable to down a pint of beer (or should I say unable to down a ¼ of pint of beer).
Although ceilidh participation was to a minimum, some of the team were tempted into the disco later for a dance or two (and when that closed I hear someone kept the party going, gatecrashing the hairy-bikers disco downstairs for a spot of grease-lighting).
Lastly, it was decided, by popular consensus, that braeburns are still the king of the apples (edit….no they're not!)
Thank you to everyone who came along, I hope everyone had fun. Also the usual big thank you to those who reffed (Carla, Jack, John R, Rob N, Jonathon and George).
And if you fancy coming along to our next tournament check out the following……..

Summer tournaments are a great opportunity to play with different people from throughout the club, in the lovely summer sun, get to know each other better socially (particularly for those of you who don’t go down the pub after training on Tues), and possibly even win a trophy or two (to go with our ceramic cow and fruit bowl trophies from last summer).
