Milton Keynes Korfball Tournament
Milton Keynes Korfball Tournament
(Sat 3rd July 2010)
Tournament Report
Squad:
Girls – Ana, Carla, Christine, Hannah
Boys – Antony, John R, Jonathon, Simon M, Stuart, Yan
Our morning games (16mins a game) consisted of:
*A 3-0 win over Milton Keynes Rogues (goals from Simon, Christine and Yan)
*A 1-1 draw, which we should of won, against Milton Keynes Bucks (goal courtesy of Carla)
*A 3-0 victory against Bassingstoke (Carla again, with 2, and 1 for Simon)
*A storming 4-1 win against Castle (Hannah on the scoresheet with 2, Carla, and a penalty for Antony)
This meant that we were in one of the two top pools for the afternoon (the winners of each top pool playing each other in the grand final). During the lunch break we enjoyed ice-creams, burgers, slushies (complete with brain freezes) and Frisbee golf (although we did not partake of the giant sumo wrestling or face painting).
The afternoon began with a Germanesque 6-2 drumming of Nottingham (2 goals for both Simon and Jonathon, and one each for Hannah and Antony). This was quickly followed by a great victory against a good Milton Keynes team, 3-1 (Simon with 2 and Jonathon with 1). Luton Hatters were the next opponents, in a see-sawing match which we started losing, then were winning before having victory snatched from our grasp in the last couple of minutes. A 2-2 draw (Antony and Hannah getting the goals) was therefore probably a fair reflection of the game. Our last match was against Phoenix, and in another exciting topsy-turvy game we ran out 3-2 winners (Carla, Jonathon and Hannah with the crucial goals).
With our good results in the afternoon we ended up topping the group and went into the final to play a very good (and young) Bearsted team, complete with ringers. We got the best possible start with Carla scoring a running in shot from the first attack. However, they fought back to take the lead. City hauled ourselves back into the contest and got to 4-4 (with goals from Jonathon, Antony and Carla). Unfortunately we were unable to find another goal and Bearsted scored twice to make it 6-4 (at least the match didn’t go to the lottery of penalties).
Second place was a great result for the team (we even got a trophy for our runners-up spot – in fact the best trophy in the world ever – a miniature ceramic cow). Well played everyone. Particularly well played to Ana and Stuart who although they have only just started playing (first tournament for
Stuart and only second one for Ana) looked like they were seasoned pros creating lots of shooting opportunities for themselves and showing excellent defence.
Carla top scored with 7 goals, followed by Simon with 6, Jonathon and Hannah with 5 and Antony with 4. Yan and Christine also got a goal a piece.
Lastly thanks to the refs – John R, Jonathon, Hannah and Carla.
Jonathon and Antony stayed for the social (including good music but a disappointing ‘eat as much pizza and you can’ meal), with Jonathon staying out partying with the Phoenix crew into the early hours of the morning.
