Cambridge City Korfball 2008

Milton Keynes Tournament 2011

Milton Keynes Korfball Tournament 2011 (Sat 16th July):

City entered two teams into the 2011 Milton Keynes Tournament, hoping to replicate their runners-up spot from the year before.

The tournament consisted of 40 teams, covering the length and breadth of the land (well Bristol to Manchester to Norwich to Kent), and featuring some of the crθme of UK korf (including England internationals Hannah Lorrimer, Rob Mann, Charlie Vogwill – who thought Amelia was a little boy so will no longer be mentioned in polite company!!!).

City I featured:
Carla
Antony
Greg
Gavin
Dan and Karen (from Croydon)
Plus a host of guest players

Whilst Cambridge City II was:
Mhari
Clare
Nathalie
Anna
John E
Dave W
Steve H
John R

The morning featured pools of four teams playing 16mins (or 10mins by the time the ref got themselves sorted) matches against each other. Oh and it rained, really hard and really continually.

City I won 2 and had an unfortunate draw against London U16s, finishing second in their pool on goal difference. For City II a combination of heavy rain, added to our opponents greater experience and guile made conditions difficult, and they battled valiantly to three losses.

In the afternoon teams were in pools of five based on where they finished in the morning, finishing with a play-off match to determine places.

City I won 3 and drew 1. Whilst for City II spirits remained high and increased with the improved weather in the afternoon. They played some really good korfball but four very narrow defeats at the end of the day could easily have gone the other way on another day.

In the play-off game City I managed to draw 1-1 against the mighty Nottingham (EKA Cup finalist and Premier League runners-up).

City II finished 37th whilst City I came joint 11th/12th (but also remained one of the few undefeated teams for the whole of the tournament).

City I Goals:

Antony – 5

Dan – 3

Lucy P – 2

Jayne (Phoenix) – 1

Lucy B – 1

City II Goals:

Steve H-            1

Dave W-            1+1 pen

John R-            2+1 pen

A nice warm shower and a big bowl of chilli in the bar followed by an enjoyably random selection of music from the live covers band rounded off the day well, with a number of City scorching the dance floor with their red hot moves.

Thanks for everyone who came along and braved the elements, for those who drove, John R for organising City II, and for Carla and John R for reffing.
