Comments:

On Sunday 29 January Cambridge City 1 faced off against a strong Kingfisher 2 side. KF2 brought along 2 girls who start for Kingfisher 1, currently residing in 4th position in the EKA league, and 2 male subs. Before the match uber-coach Janine urged the team to relish the opportunity of a tough game, and consequently most people needed a nervous wee.

First attack: Jack, Simon, Loes, Sian
First defence: Andy, Antony, Carla, Elly
Subs: Lucy B, Halim, Rob W

City got off to a strong start, taking the opening 3 goals. Starting out in attack were Jack, Simon, Loes and Sian, who all looked splendid in their matching red shirts. At change of ends, Carla was obviously a bit worried that Loes might threaten her position as most amazingly supreme lady scorer and so immediately scored a long shot, which she had practiced to perfection in the warm up. The defensive division accompanying Carla of Andy, Antony and Elly was unable to reply as KF2 converted a penalty. From there City went on to strengthen their lead, finishing the first half at 15-7, having scored more than twice as many goals as their opposition.

The second half was less remarkable, with City showing their average age of 51.4 years. There were little opportunities for the timing down of the shot clock as the referee’s whistle did not leave any intervals of longer than 20 seconds before being blown. Despite numerous substitutions, which saw the always entertaining Lucy B strut her stuff, Halim sprint around so fast you couldn’t see him, and Rob W remain remarkably calm in the face of Carla’s wrath, City lost the second half, scoring one fewer than KF2, although it was very lovely to see all the starting 8 adding their names to the scoresheet kept very neatly by the hopalong uber-coach. The match finished a comfortable 23-16, with super-sub Rob scoring the final goal of the match.

Goals: Simon Mc ‘the kiwi’(5) (MVP), Loes the Dutch (4), Carla ‘the face’ (3), Jack ‘the injured’ (3), Sian ‘the gets naked during Frisbee matches’ (1), Elly ‘the drunk’ (1), Antony ‘the organiser’ (1), Subs Halim ‘the moves so fast you can’t see him’ (2), Rob W ‘the work is more important than korfball’ (1), Lucy B ‘I don’t defend or run’.
