KORFBALL: City take the NL plunge three years ahead of schedule

Fresh from winning the Cambridgeshire Division One league title, Cambridge City Korfball Club has its sights set high for next season, and is stepping up to enter the England Korfball Association (EKA) National League in its own right.

City previously competed in the EKA National League as a composite team with players from local clubs Phoenix, Lions, and Cambridge University.

But with the Cambridge korfball crown under its belt, and on the back of other successes such as receiving a £10,000 Awards for All grant and Clubmark status, City is ready to take the plunge.

Chair Tracey Cooper said: "The move to go it alone in the National League is part of our five year development plan and, though we are only two years into the plan, we feel we have the squad to perform well in this competition ahead of our five year target."

Club coach Janine Collier said: "Stealing the title of the Cambridgeshire Division One League from Cambridge Tigers (who finished third in Division One of the National League) has proven that we can compete at the highest level. We have both the strength and the depth to aim high."

This season, the City composite team was fifth placed in the National League.

KORFBALL: City take the roar out of Tigers

Cambridge City Korfball Club took the roar out of Cambridge Tigers last night, beating the existing title holders 11-10 to take the Cambridge Division One league title.

The historical win ends Tigers' six year dominance at the top of the table.

City went out fighting and put four points on the board before Tigers even looked like replying.

Its experienced line-up, including England international Carla Bennett and Ireland international Rachel Camina, dominated for the first 30 minutes of the game to lead 9-2 at the break.

But the game was far from won and Tigers clawed back in the second half, steadily reducing the gap until coming within a whisker of upsetting City's lead.

Despite only putting the ball in the basket twice in the second half, some tight defence and controlled attack meant City had done enough to secure the win, and the title.

City goal scorers were: Rachel Camina (1), Nick Collier (1 plus 1 penalty ), Simon McGregor (1), Sian Mawditt (2), Andy Rutter (3), Dave Timney (2 penalties).

KORFBALL: Cambridge City Korfball Club heaped pressure on top of the table rivals Cambridge Tigers after racking up a record-breaking 35 goals in just 50 minutes in their 35-2 demolition of Cambridge University 1. The result sends them to the top of Division 1 of the Cambridgeshire Korfball Association.

Tigers have held the League title for the last 6 years, but City are hot on their tails this season. City and Tigers are presently level on points at the top of Division 1, but City's performance last night puts them ahead of Tigers with a goal difference of +91, compared to Tigers' goal difference of +64. It also moves City's Nick Collier, who scored a record-breaking 12 goals in last night's game, to the top of the CKA Division 1 goal scoring chart.

The first encounter between Tigers 1 and City 1 this season resulted in an 8-8 draw, and the final meeting will not take place until 27 April.

KORFBALL: Christmas comes early for Cambridge City Korfball Club.

Cambridge City Korfball Club was given an early Christmas gift, receiving an Awards for All grant.

The £10,000 grant will allow the club to expand its pilot projects for children (aged 3-13), as well as contribute to the continued development of its successful senior club.

City piloted a multi-sports skills programme (the Tykes), for children aged 3-6, and a Junior section, for children aged 7-13, during 2006. Both incorporated FUNdamentals skills to develop childrens' confidence and enthusiasm for playing games.

Both clubs proved so successful, City decided to try and extend access and participation to more members of the Cambridge community - something the grant will make possible.

Cambridge City Korfball Club head coach Janine Collier said: "The award will ensure that the club can make a significant capital investment in equipment and coach and administrator education to ensure that the multi-sports skills programme and the junior korfball programme launched in September 2006 are sustainable in the long term.

"The projects will enable and encourage more people to participate in local sport, promoting a healthier lifestyle, teamwork, and the social opportunities associated with membership of a sports club."

Awards for All is the small grants scheme administered by the Big Lottery Fund on behalf of Lottery good cause funders, Arts Council England, Big Lottery Fund, Heritage Lottery Fund and Sport England. The scheme makes awards of between £300 and £10,000 to grass roots community groups and voluntary organisations.

It's been a successful end of year for City, with the club also recently becoming the first korfball club in the country to be awarded cross-sport quality accreditation Clubmark, and the first club to be awarded Clubmark by Cambridge and Peterborough sports partnership Living Sport.
